Project leader (Associate principal scientist) – Global Poultry R&D Job

The global Poultry R&D department is looking for an enthusiastic new team member to support our bacteriological and parasitological vaccine development projects.

The Animal Health R&D organization for the development of biologicals is organized in five Species groups (Aquatic, Companion Animals, Poultry, Ruminants and Swine) and Discovery and Technology (D&T).
The Poultry Biologicals R&D department has global responsibility for the development of new vaccines for chickens. We develop inactivated, live, and genetically modified vaccines for all regions in the world. The team is based in Europe and in the US and we are now looking for a project leader (Associate principal scientist) to be based in our research facility in Boxmeer, the Netherlands.

As Project leader you will be responsible for several feasibility, pre-development and/or development projects for bacteriological or parasitological vaccines and you will report to the Geo Head Poultry R&D. Our current bacteriological and parasitological vaccine development is located in Milton Keynes in the UK. Therefore, during the first half year of the job you will also work with members from our team in Milton Keynes which will require travel to the UK on multiple occasions.

For this position job interviews will be planned in November/December and we are hoping to hire in January.

Your responsibilities:

  • Lead cross-functional project team(s) for multiple vaccine development projects (bacteriological and/or parasitological projects)

  • Supervise scientists and manage development.

  • Function as Study Director for animal experiments.

  • Responsible for directing development and validation of laboratory methods and techniques.

  • Provide project reports/updates to management.

  • Establish a proficient communication and efficient collaboration with internal customers in other Departments (Discovery and Technology, Regulatory, Marketing, Technical Services, Quality Control and Assurance, Manufacturing) with the goal of developing poultry vaccines with the best possible label claims.

  • Establish relationships with external collaborators like Contract Research Organizations, Universities and Institutes to support project development and enhance the Poultry R&D project portfolio.

  • Support other departments when technical issues arise in the areas of poultry vaccine manufacturing, testing or performance in the field.

Desired skills & experience

  • A PhD in the area of bacteriology or parasitology.

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of Salmonella or Coccidiosis is an advantage.

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in the field of veterinary vaccine development.

  • Previous people management experience preferred.

  • Proven ability to maintain an overview of multiple projects/products.

  • Understanding of animal health product research and development processes is an advantage.

  • Strategic thinking, commercially aware and have ability to work in a global matrix environment.

  • Proven ability to work under high pressure and to meet critical timelines.

  • Strong communication, negotiation, problem solving skills.

  • Fluent in English and excellent writing skills.

  • Excellent team-player skills.
