MSD Biotech
Within MSD Biotech, novel biologic active ingredients (“drug substance”) are manufactured, including medicines for fertility, diabetes, and oncology. We have global partners in the U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific to ensure medicines are delivered in a safe, reliable and cost-effective way. Within MSD Oss Biotech, there are two Integrated Process Teams (IPTs) – responsible for Upstream Processing (USP) and Downstream Processing (DSP) operations. Specifically, the Upstream Processing IPT is responsible for cell culture and microbiology operations in two facilities, with bioreactors ranging in scale from 10 to 22,000 litters. In addition, the initial recovery operations are also conducted within the USP IPT, prior to shipment of biologic intermediates to the DSP IPT or to external partners.

The department
The Director of Technical Operations reports into the General Manager Biotech Oss and is responsible for the technical functions that provide regular day- to-day support to Site Operations (IPTs and Quality). Technical Operations is considered the owner of the processes and provides expertise in problem solving, third party tech transfer in or out, and is responsible for characterization and process improvements for existing in-line products.

The position
The Director of Technical Operations is responsible for Upstream and Downstream Process Management support and new product/ process fits & tech transfer into IPTs, including coordination of the execution of clinical or PPQ campaigns, and ensuring complete reporting and source documentation requirements are met for filing purposes. The Technical Operations Biotech department is responsible for all aspects of technical process support including problem resolution, cleaning validation, technology transfers, process automation and maintenance to Biologics manufacturing, including continuous improvement of commercial processes.

The Director of Technical Operations is a member of the Biotech Site Leadership Team and leads a department of approximately 40 people and is responsible for ensuring the required competencies, talent management and development of people. He/ she will create an environment for collaboration across the interconnected, interdependent global network for all the areas of responsibilities which include personal engagement, sponsorship of active participation in management of knowledge, communities of practice, virtual technical networks, product stewardship, technology platforms and best practices sharing.

Next to this the Director of Technical Operations – Biotech will be responsible for:

• Process support and improvement for licensed processing, technology transfer, qualification and licensure of new products into the site, technology transfer of products from the site to an alternate manufacturing location and support for projects;
• Engineering responsibilities, which include planning and execution of site capital projects and LRCP / master planning;
• All aspects of technical process and automation support including problem resolution, process improvements, technology transfers and process maintenance to Biologics manufacturing;
• Additionally, the role will leverage the association with the Global Technical Operations (GTO) Group and Global Process Development that provides external partner support, to collaborate on providing technical support to external partners within the region as a secondary responsibility.


• Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering, Pharmaceuticals, Science or Equivalent ;
• At least 15 years of relevant experience;
• At least 5 years of experience in operations line positions, with responsibility for direct and indirect reports;
• Technical Expertise in Pharmaceuticals, Engineering and Automation (required), industrial large scale cell culture (biologics) experience is a strong plus;
• Demonstrated track record of applying scientific, technical knowledge and problem solving approaches to deliver business results;
• In-depth knowledge of (MSD) financial systems (budgets, expenses, product standards and variances);
• Experience with project management; organizing work efforts by prioritizing tasks, using resources optimally, establishing appropriate deadlines and ensuring on-time delivery and right first time by integrating with partner areas;
• Experience in bridging boundaries across teams, functions, divisions, geographies, external stakeholders and customers;
• LEAN mind-set and drive for continuous improvement;
• Demonstrated Team Leader, with track-record of building high-performing teams and developing talent;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (mandatory), Dutch is a strong plus.
