MSD in Carlow is a world-class manufacturing facility, and the company’s first stand-alone vaccine and biologics facility outside the US. Carlow employs over 350 highly skilled employees and is an important element of MSD’s network of sites, playing a pivotal role in the manufacture of our immuno-oncology treatment.

  • As part of our Manufacturing Division, the Manufacturing Systems Design & Commercialization (MSDC) MPS Team is responsible for installing MPS for the new IPT Carlow site
  • MPS will be embedded into the foundation at start up and become the basis for how we operate. The focus will be on the design and execution of the operating systems, management systems, mindset and behaviours, and capabilities of our people enabling us to produce critical vaccines and biologics medicines at the highest quality, for the lowest cost, and in the shortest lead time
  • The MPS lead will work with the IPT leaders and site MPS to design, build and qualify lean systems and processes that directly support manufacturing. Significant time will be spent on the shop floor providing direct, hands on support of activities, with the expectation of coaching leaders and developing MPS capabilities within the organization, implementing local MPS standards used for commercialization and launch activity. 

  • Sponsor and drive a safe-by-choice culture to achieve Target Zero for workplace injuries
  • Partner with and consult cross-functional groups, plant manager and the leadership team to develop plans and execute lean design for this new facility operations and infrastructure
  • Develop and install lean management systems and processes for the shop floor through the use of visual factory and Leaders Standardized Work
  • Build MPS capabilities by executing people development plans and processes
  • Utilize various lean tools, techniques and global MPS standards to design and install critical business processes and standardized work
  • Provide teaching and coaching to effectively transfer Lean skills into the organization for the development of Lean Leaders
  • Sponsor and drive company-owned sustainability goals and actions


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management, Industrial Engineering or related field 
  • Experience analyzing end-to-end supply chains and driving complex process improvement activities delivering real business value 
  • Hands-on application of lean tools and techniques: standardized work, scientific problem solving, value stream mapping, mistake proofing, SMED, 5S-Visual Factory, capacity analysis 
  • Coaching, Teaching, and driving a High Performance Organization. Proven experience in coaching and teaching others to think, behave and apply lean methods and tools. Experience enabling and leveraging diverse perspectives, talents, etc. to achieve business outcomes 
  • Considerable experience and critical skills in their area of expertise that add value to the business; ideally in a manufacturing, preferably GMP setting
  • Experience applying consultative skills: ability to influence decision making, ability to interact with all levels of the business (senior leaders to shop floor working teams), project management skills (demonstrated experience in managing large teams), solid business acumen, proven team building skills, exceptionally good listening skills, results oriented, strong analytical skills, and prior process improvement experience 
  • Experience in a Vaccines, Biologics or Sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. 
  • Experience with operations start up activity including greenfield or brownfield facilities 
  • Experience leading strategy development using Hoshin Kanri
  • Build trust and develop new relationships with internal and external clients to effectively collaborate and achieve successful outcomes at a regional/global level

Carlow 2 Operations Lead 

Core Capabilities
  • Proactively recognize and mitigate barriers to cross-functional initiatives and can act as an intermediary across divisional, geographical, and cultural boundaries 
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and challenging the status quo, while driving departmental/regional strategies that align with MSD's long term strategy 
  • Manage teams to mitigate risk, allocate resources, and drive on time completion of initiatives 
  • Mentor others on effective communication and active listening techniques to better understand client/customer needs and expectations 
  • Lead deep process analysis through value stream mapping to measure stagnation of inventory and information and can lead kaizen to increase capacity and improve process performance 
  • Develop visual controls and framework to make problems visible and responds with urgency to effectively break down complex problems, lead root cause analysis, and develop effective countermeasures 
  • Lead and coach kaizen with a team to achieve multiple target conditions to achieve an overall challenge 
  • Lead kaizen to improve standardized work 
  • Can design balanced work based on takt time (pace of demand), with smooth flow and leads kaizen to minimize lead time, inventory, and change-over time 
  • Apply industry standard 8-step Problem Solving methodology to solve complex problems urgently 
  • Able to engage sponsors and clients, lead major changes, and effectively coach senior leaders
