Responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting manufacturing equipment, mechanical maintenance technicians directly support of manufacturing operations. During the four year mechanical apprenticeship, the apprentice will be required to follow a specific course of training and undergo a series of assessments to confirm that they have reached the industry standard required for a mechanical maintenance technician.

Additionally, the apprentice mechanical technician is required to ensure that objectives are effectively achieved, consistent with Merck's requirements to ensure compliance, safety and reliable supply to our customers.

Principal Accountabilities:

Support the qualified maintenance technician in the provision of effective technical support to Production in all aspects of machine and equipment maintenance. To include, but not limited to, the installation, modification, maintenance and troubleshooting of complex manufacturing equipment and controls systems.

During the four year mechanical apprenticeship, the mechanical apprentice will be required to follow a specific course of training and undergo a series of assessments to confirm that they have reached the industry standard required for a mechanical maintenance technician.

Support maintenance planning and preventative maintenance through completion of planned and emergency work orders, PMs etc. Document maintenance work, including upgrades, made to existing equipment, including preventative maintenance performed and parts used, to ensure appropriate documentation and records of repair history.

Operate and monitor production support equipment, using MES/DCS and PLC based systems, to ensure optimum equipment uptime and target outputs, whilst facilitating continuous process improvements using Lean Principles.

Operate, troubleshoot and repair complex systems which may include CIP, Autoclaves, Glassware Washers, production vessels, HVAC, Isolators, compressed gasses, plant steam/condensate, bulk chemical distribution and waste water treatment under minimal supervision in a highly regulated, cGMP environment. Interpret P&ID’s, equipment/system layouts, wiring diagrams, and specifications in planning and performing maintenance and repairs.

Support continuous improvement by actively participating in repairs, upgrades, preventative maintenance and system failure investigations and investigation reports, execution/development of change control, and contribution to Kaizen events as appropriate. Perform root cause analysis of system failures, substandard equipment performance, using standard tools and methods, to resolve machine and system issues e.g. FMEA, Fishbone diagrams, 5 why’s etc.; implement subsequent corrective action through the change management system.

Participate effectively in receiving training in operational procedures, training materials, maintenance procedures and the apprentice program training requirements.; ensure all work is carried out in line with same.

Required to comply with Merck Global Policies, Procedures and Guidelines,
regulatory requirements and execute current Good manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in the
performance of day to day activities and all applicable job functions.

Required to comply with the apprentice program guidelines and to complete all on-the-job phases and off-the-job phases (held in a Training Centre / Educational College) set out by the apprentice program.

Work collaboratively to drive a safe and compliant culture in Carlow.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Typical Minimum Education


  • Candidates must be over 16 years of age.

  • Minimum of Grade O5 in PASS Maths and a minimum Grade O6in four other subjects in the Leaving Certificate Exam or an approved equivalent.

  • Achieves the required level of Aptitude Testing

Technical 

  • Minimum of Grade O5 in PASS Maths and a minimum Grade O6 in four other subjects in the Leaving Certificate Exam or an approved equivalent.

  • Achieves the required level of Aptitude Testing

  • Understanding of some mechanical/electrical/Instrumentation / pneumatic principles

  • Report writing skills required
