The latest addition to the MSD Ireland family is MSD Biotech, Dublin. The site will play a pivotal role in the manufacture of MSD’s biologics-based medicines, including in the area of immuno-oncology, and will expand MSD’s current internal network of biologics drug substance manufacturing plants when full manufacturing operations begin in 2021.

MSD Biotech Dublin, will be MSD’s first ever Large-Scale Mammalian-Based Drug Substance Facility, with the mission and ambition to manufacture breakthrough medicines from Ireland for patients around the world.

This facility will be a significant supplier of drug substances for one of MSD’s key treatments and will also be critical in the future supply of new biotechnology products to its global network.


The Downstream Equipment Engineer / Specialist will be responsible for supporting the start of MSD Biotech Dublin and will initially be involved in Final Equipment Design, Installation and Commissioning Support. They will start to develop Operational Readiness plans for the downstream area which will require the identification and management of associate tasks. These tasks will include managing resources to develop procedures, training materials and asset reliability plans.
They will develop knowledge of the equipment and process and will own the initiation, implementation and closure of equipment change initiatives once the site is in Operations. This role provides a unique opportunity as the primary equipment engineer for the downstream stream area and to be involved and oversee activities from project to commercial state.


• Development, review and approval of technical information including design documents, Hazops, Safety Risk Assessments, Work Plans, Commissioning documents and CMMS data.
• Establish Equipment Criticality and determine and apply appropriate reliability and asset management strategy based on criticality.
• Ensure compliance to all Safety, regulatory GMP and Environmental requirements.
• Work with Operations, Quality and Manufacturing Science &Technology teams to successfully achieve regulatory approval to manufacture and to meet the Project & Supply Chain target for shipment of product.
• Develop Prescriptive, Predictive and Preventative maintenance program to ensure designated site equipment operate safe and reliable.
• Investigate equipment issues or deviations to find root cause and implement effective short term Corrective and Preventative Actions.
• Coach, mentor and provide technical training to colleagues.
• Develop and manage People, Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost KPI’s for Downstream Area.
• Support Engineering Excellence Initiatives – participate in local and corporate programs.
• Pursues and use new technologies and methodologies.
• Own the initiation, management and closure of change initiatives, including equipment modifications and new equipment introduction.



Reports to Downstream Equipment Engineering / Maintenance Manager in 2020.



• Experience of biologics manufacturing in an engineering, maintenance or utilities role.

• Experience of process equipment in a biologics facility, preferable in Drug Substance Operations and Downstream Area.
• Knowledgeable on problem solving and change management.
• Knowledgeable of mechanical, electrical, control and automation systems maintenance requirements.
• Experience of continuous improvement and optimisation techniques.
• Working knowledge of SAP or another Asset Management System. 

• Excellent organising, planning skills, and communication skills.
• Proven success working in a team environment with flexibility to react to changing business needs.
• High level of attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to make Decisions and provide leadership to others.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a cross functional collaborative environment

• Level 8 qualification in an engineering discipline with evidence of continuous professional development.
