MSD BIOTECH, DUBLIN

The latest addition to the MSD Ireland family is MSD Biotech, Dublin. The site will play a pivotal role in the manufacture of MSD’s biologics-based medicines, including in the area of immuno-oncology, and will expand MSD’s current internal network of biologics drug substance manufacturing plants when full manufacturing operations begin in 2021.

MSD Biotech Dublin, will be MSD’s first ever Large-Scale Mammalian-Based Drug Substance Facility, with the mission and ambition to manufacture breakthrough medicines from Ireland for patients around the world.

This facility will be a significant supplier of drug substances for one of MSD’s key treatments and will also be critical in the future supply of new biotechnology products to its global network.


& SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES


The Upstream Manufacturing Shift Manager will provide front-line leadership to a team within the Integrated Process Team (IPT) in our Biologics operation to manufacture quality biologic products in accordance with our Manufacturing Division Priorities of: Compliance, Supply, Strategy and Profit Plan.

The Upstream Manufacturing Shift Manager is responsible for the management of the team through the active implementation of the Tier process. He/she will be responsible for moulding a High-Performance culture within his/her team by creating an environment of flexibility, collaboration, engagement and teamwork.

The Upstream Manufacturing Shift Manager will be an active member within the cross functional IPT providing support, guidance and expertise to ensure the success of the IPT. The Upstream Manufacturing Shift Manager will model the MSD Leadership behaviours and understand the MSD Production System principles to drive a culture of continuous improvement building a High-Performance Organisation.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

• Create a high performing manufacturing team through a robust recruitment and onboarding process

• Key player on the operations readiness team during start up, interfacing with the project to ensure the manufacturing facility will operate as per the user requirements

• Lead a team responsible for the manufacture of bulk drug substance in a cGMP regulatory environment by providing ongoing coaching and support to all team members, including the identification and development of key talent and skills within the team.

• Provide operations input/support to the design, commissioning and qualification of the new manufacturing facility at MSD Biotech Dublin through to commercialisation.

• Lead team to establishment the commercial process and routine manufacturing operations by serving as a commercial manufacturing process subject matter expert

• Drive the team’s performance so that every individual understands their individual contribution and how it impacts the site.

• Ensure supply of high quality product through tactical planning and execution of production schedules

• Lead and support various manufacturing initiatives including safety, compliance, work standardisation, etc).

• Create and sustain a culture of right first time in everything that we do through a focus on principles of lean including simplification, standard work, visual management and learning development.

• Consistently deliver on specific area Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), e.g. EHS metrics, production plan, compliance and team training

• Ensure highest Quality & Compliance standards.

• Responsible for driving a culture of Continuous Improvement by deploying MSD Six Sigma tools within the IPT on projects such as: problem solving, reducing cycle time, lean principles within the process.

• Develop an effective, focused and strong team by understanding: their abilities, unique contribution and broadening their skill set to be agile and prepared for any future business requirements

• Provide your team with the tools and development opportunities (including educational assistance, job rotation and cross-functional training) to make them successful.


REPORTING STRUCTURE

The Upstream Manufacturing Shift Manager will report to the Associate Director Operations (Drug Substance).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE - KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

General
• A minimum of 8 years’ experience in process operations together with previous supervisory experience in an automated biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

• Proven capability for delivering results in a regulated Pharmaceutical environment.

• Knowledge of and experience in applying Lean Six Sigma and Lean methodologies.

• Demonstrated leadership skills with a continuous improvement focus.

• Thorough knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

Technical
• Experience with commercial drug substance manufacturing of biologics.

• In-depth working knowledge of manufacturing upstream operations.

• Experience interacting with regulatory agencies.


People
• Demonstrated ability to lead a team and work across boundaries to achieve production goals.

• Excellent communication, decision making, people influencing and project management skills.

Education
• Third level qualification in a Science or Engineering related subject.
