Position Overview


  • The position is a dedicated resource in the Oncology Business Unit reporting to the Franchise Manager. Being a core member of the commercial team, the Scientific Engagement Lead (SEL) will add value to our stakeholders in all interactions, differentiating MSD from the competition and ensuring that we engage with our stakeholders through the right channel at the right time with the right information to drive the right behavioural change.


  • Relevant stakeholders will mainly be healthcare professionals (oncologists, nurses, pathologists, surgeons, etc) but the successful individual will also focus on our engagement and strategic relationship with professional bodies, pharmacists and patient organisations across a range of indications.


  • The SEL will be responsible for making sure the voice and opinions from our external stakeholders are reflected into MSD’s campaigns and activities. The SEL will act as the clinical data expert within the marketing team and will be proactive in building upon his/her knowledge to increase the value proposition of MSD and its brands in oncology.

  • The role will require close collaboration with all Oncology Brand & Customer managers and the wider cross functional team members to ensure consistent and integrated channel execution for our inline and future indications.



Key Activities


  • Clinical data expert within marketingbrings insights into organisation & upskill team on therapy area, product & competition.

    By working closely with Medical Affairs and proactively monitoring the external environment (publications, clinician feedback, congresses, etc.), the SEL will drive the integration of key scientific topics and insights into the commercial activities within the business unit. The SEL will align these to the product strategy (adoption ladders and desired behaviour changes) defined by the marketing team.



  • Branded Activity:

    • Stakeholder plans to drive adoption of strategic objectives, behaviour change & advocacy for brand.

      Aligned to the marketing strategy, the SEL will drive advocacy for MSD’s brands and indications through meaningful interactions with external stakeholders. By being an expert in both the therapy area and external environment, the SEL will be in a position to define and execute truly differentiating activities.

    • Delivery through channel mix F2F, webcast, talking heads, etc.

      The SEL will deliver this through a range of traditional and innovative channels. Being a core member of the marketing team, integration and alignment with other campaigns and activities will be critical.

    • Partnership with professional bodies.

      The SEL will be responsible for the development and execution of strategic partnerships with key professional groups and organisations within the therapy areas he/she is responsible for. Moving beyond the execution of typical promotional activities, the SEL will identify common goals to create sustainable and value adding partnerships benefiting patients, MSD and the NHS.

    • Medical Education - Supporting Medical Education activities by working alongside Scientific Leaders and Brand & Customer Managers to develop relevant content that drives advocacy for on-license indications. 

      • Identify ways to multipurpose relevant content, find synergies and participate in content creation.

      • Proactively seek to engage external stakeholders in novel and compelling ways leveraging technology.

      • Assist in the planning and execution of filming at Conferences or National Medical Education webcasts

      • Lead on the filming and post-production of video content that can later be used on-line in a promotional context

      • Leading the ABPI certification of content via the Medical-Legal approval process


  • Non-Branded Activity:

    • Internal awareness / disease awareness campaigns.

      Working with the marketing and external affairs team, the SEL will drive elements of internal awareness and disease awareness campaings aligned to the therapy area.

    • Thought leadership development.

    • Engagement with patient orgs.

      Development of strategic relationships with patient organisations to ensure that MSD activities and campaigns reflect patients’ best interest and are reflected into our day to day strategic planning. Drive value adding activities which will raise MSD’s profile in the relevant therapy areas.

    • Explore/utilise social media channels for delivery of above brand relevant content.


  • Clinical training delivery for FF - The SEL will be responsible for defining and delivering components of the field force & wider XFT training linked to the disease area and product specific knowledge/content. To this goal, the SEL will work with the BCMs and Training Team to create the required content.

Knowledge Required:

  • The Successful candidate should be able to demonstrate experience/competencies in several of the following areas:

    • Strong commercial and scientific acumen, being able to translate scientific information into commercial actions and campaigns

    • Understanding of key marketing principles such as brand planning, campaign execution and pharmaceutical promotion

    • Development of relationships with scientific leaders / professional bodies

    • Experience in delivering / training scientific content

    • Strong project management skills, ideally with experience managing certification of assets via the Med-Leg review process

    • Strong knowledge of the ABPI code

    • Experience with MSD Connect, Veeva and/or other digital platforms

    • A working knowledge of the NHS
