As an Associate Director, Data Architecture supporting our Analytics activities for Global Business Services (GBS) you will partner with MSD Information Technology (IT) Teams, our Global Process Owner (GPO) Teams, and our Business Service Center (BSC) Teams where you will be responsible for reviewing and understanding the business requirements to guide the creation of a comprehensive, coherent, and effective data architecture and data flows in and out of the various financial data applications. He/she will design the data structures and ensure the data stewardship, governance and change management of all financial data, data flows and any proposed data extraction, transformation or loading procedures are executed in line with MSD standards.


The primary activities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that Data Models are fit for purpose and ensure they are reviewed on an ongoing basis to meet business needs
  • Own the creation of data models that conform to existing standards & conventions
  • Ensure that data dictionary definitions, governance practices & standards are in place
  • Collaborate and partnering with MSD IT security architects to ensure compliance with data security & privacy mandates.
  • Lead proposals for database solutions through potential system designs & End-to end data lifecycle management activities
  • Lead the evaluation and recommendation of new and emerging data management and storage technologies & standards
  • Oversee all stages of design, build, analysis, coding, testing, and integration of structured/unstructured data to deploy new data and analytics platforms as required
  • Assures designs & project activities follow data policies, architecture, security & quality guidelines & standards
  • Drives the adoption and integration of new innovative technologies into organization wide projects and activities within GBS and the Enterprise as required
  • Manages the maintenance and adaptation of existing tools and reports to support business process management and performance management
  • Manages the installation of database systems i.e. develop flowcharts, apply optimum access techniques, coordinate installation actions, document installation process
  • Self-educate on industry updates i.e. read industry publications, maintain personal networks, participate in professional organizations, participate in educational opportunities
  • Ensures data is governed and stewarded for all data sets
  • Ensures operational oversight of data, manage data quality, data privacy, security and risk management, as well as establishing policies and procedures
Qualifications

Education:
  • BA or BS in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field
  • 8-10+ years database design, data modeling and analytics reporting experience
  • Providing leadership and guidance with enterprise data strategies
  • Experience preparing presentations for and presenting to senior management
  • Strong business acumen

Skills Required:
  • Extensive Experience with data engineering tools, languages, frameworks to mine, cleanse and explore data
  • Extensive Experience in automating ETL processes using relevant ETL tools
  • Advanced data architecture and data modeling experience using relational databases, e.g. MS SQL and/or AWS Redshift
  • Evaluating and selecting forms and processes for database architecture testing and methodology, including writing and/or supervision on execution of test plans, debugging, and testing scripts and tools
  • Experience in BI application development using Spotfire or other BI Applications
  • Knowledge and experience with SAP modules such as Finance, HR, Sales and Distribution, plus knowledge of information management practices, standards and principles, and 6 Sigma is highly desirable
  • Have a foundation in systems development: the data architect must understand the system development life cycle; software project management approaches; and requirements, design, and test techniques. The data architect is asked to conceptualize and influence application and interface projects, and therefore must understand what advice to give and where to plug in to steer toward desirable outcomes
  • Have depth in data modeling and database design: The effective data architect is sound across all phases of data modeling, from conceptualization to database optimization. In his/her experience this skill extends to SQL development and perhaps database administration
  • Have breadth in established and emerging data technologies: The data architect is experienced or conversant in emerging tools like columnar and NoSQL databases, predictive analytics, data visualization, and unstructured data
  • Ability to conceive and portray the big data picture: The data architect maps the systems and interfaces used to manage data, sets standards for data management, analyzes current state and conceives desired future state, and conceives projects needed to close the gap between current state and future goals
  • Ability to astutely operate in the organization: Well respected and influential, able to emphasize methodology, modeling, and governance, technologically and politically neutral, articulate, persuasive, and a good salesperson, and enthusiastic
  • Results driven and self-motivated
  • An analytical problem solver
  • Collaborative: demonstrated experience applying excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills working with global and cross-functional teams towards common goals, realizing that the best results come from the combined efforts of diverse teams
  • Knowledge of MSD’s financial systems, market, and geographical segmentation a plus
  • Experience in project management a plus
  • Experience in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) stack a plus
