As an Associate Director, the Data Architect will provide technical data architecture and analytics expertise to Global Business Services (GBS) where you will partner with MSD Information Technology (IT) Teams, our Global Process Owner (GPO) Teams, and our Business Service Center (BSC) Teams.


This critical role will deliver data architecture and analytics components for related projects and services in alignment with the overall Technology Architecture and Data Strategy while maintaining the integrity of the end-to-end platform data layer. He / She will be a key advocate for data governance practices while also ensuring data management standards are adhered to. This role requires understanding of project management standards, both waterfall and agile, and solid functional knowledge of finance processes, master data management principles and commercial business processes. He / She will design the data model and structures and ensure the data stewardship, governance and change management of all financial data, data flows and any proposed data extraction, transformation or loading procedures are executed in line with MSD standards.

The primary activities include but are not limited to:

  • Quickly learn MSD Digital Platform and IT architecture.
  • Collaborate with business, digital leads, IT platform leads to understand strategy, translating functional & non-functional requirements into effective design & architectural guidance to articulate solution options, evaluation of tradeoffs, as well as influencing key decisions.
  • Define, develop and communicate information management standards relating to the location, media type and security requirements to facilitate efficient and secure management of all data elements.
  • Evaluate software and data providers to ensure interoperability within internal and/or external technology landscape.
  • Leverage existing and future IT and data platforms and deploy integrated solutions.
  • Generate framework concepts and coding definitions for enhancements to global platforms and provide guidance where needed.
  • Ability to design quality solutions in both agile and scalable methodologies.
  • Lead and contributes to platform solutions working with cross regional teams (IT Hubs).
  • Informed on market trends and new use cases for design, data models, and analytics and suggests evolution of the architecture according to these external and internal circumstances.
  • Ensures data is governed and stewarded for all data sets.
  • Ensures operational oversight of data, manage data quality, data privacy, security and risk management, as well as establishing policies and procedures.
  • Lead proposals for database solutions through potential system designs & End-to end data lifecycle management activities.
  • Lead the evaluation and recommendation of new and emerging data management and storage technologies & standards.

Education & Experience:

  • MSc, BS in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Statistics or related field
  • 8-10+ years database design, data modeling or analytics reporting experience
  • Providing leadership and guidance with enterprise data strategies
  • Experience preparing presentations for and presenting to senior management
  • Strong business acumen

Skills Required:

  • Experience in data platforms development, as well as a good understanding of application development, maintenance and support for Enterprise Applications (Cloud/API/WebServices).
  • Experience of and strong ability to translate business requirements into data models and solutions in support of the finance or commercial business.
  • Knowledge and experience with SAP modules such as Finance, HR, Sales and Distribution, plus knowledge of information management practices, standards and principles, and 6 Sigma is highly desirable.
  • Experience and knowledge on data integration patterns and business intelligence concepts.
  • Knowledge and skills related to project Management Standards e.g. PMP, Prince2 Practioner, ITIL, SCRUM Master or similar skills/experience.
  • Has participated in, or be familiar with, Agile (Scrum) project methodology and practices.
  • Motivated team player with excellent interpersonal skills, actively collaborates and shares knowledge.
  • Strong analytical thinker and problem-solver with the ability to quickly process complex information and present it clearly and simply.
  • Ability to self-learn and develop business and technical knowledge quickly and apply these to business problems.
  • Establish and lead a team of Data Architecture Stewards to ensure that the data is architected and stewarded in line with best practices and MSD Standards.
  • Manage a team of people globally and remotely to ensure team priorities are delivered successfully.  
  • Drive the team’s performance so that every individual understands their individual contribution and how it impacts their area of responsibility.
  • Have a foundation in systems development: the data architect must understand the system development life cycle; software project management approaches; requirements, design, and test techniques. The data architect is asked to conceptualize and influence application and interface projects, and therefore must understand what advice to give and where to plug in to steer toward desirable outcomes.
  • Have depth in data modeling and database design: The effective data architect is sound across all phases of data modeling, from conceptualization to database optimization. In his/her experience this skill extends to SQL development and perhaps database administration.
  • Have breadth in established and emerging data technologies: The data architect is experienced or conversant in emerging tools like columnar and NoSQL databases, predictive analytics, data visualization, and unstructured data.
  • Ability to conceive and portray the big data picture: The data architect maps the systems and interfaces used to manage data, sets standards for data management, analyzes current state and conceives desired future state, and conceives projects needed to close the gap between current state and future goals.
  • Ability to astutely operate in the organization: Well respected and influential, able to emphasize methodology, modeling, and governance, technologically and politically neutral, articulate, persuasive, a good salesperson, and enthusiastic.
