MSD Ballydine develops and supplies the active ingredients and final formulated product for a range of innovative medicines at its manufacturing and R&D facilities. The plant, which has been operating in Tipperary for over 40 years, exports to over 25 countries around the world with primary markets being Europe, USA and Japan.

We are currently recruiting a Chemical/Process Engineer to work in the Techincal Group in our Formulation research and development facility in Ballydine. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to work on multiple projects, ranging from manufacturing support activities, to late stage clinical product development and scale-up, new product introductions and technology transfers.

The Chemical Process Engineer will be an active member within the cross functional Pharm Ops IPT Team providing support, guidance and technical input to ensure the success of the Pharm Ops IPT.
This is a 2 year fixed term contract.


  • Ownership of manufacturing process equipment and supply product processes.

  • Process and equipment optimisation in order to sustain and improve product quality, yields and throughput. Making recommendations and implementing measures to improve production systems, equipment performance, yields and quality of product.

  • Having direct responsibility for development of process documentation and electronic work instructions (Manufacturing Execution System).

  • Interfacing with new product development groups to integrate new products into the Ballydine facility either as new process development entities or as product transfer from another manufacturing facility. Supporting migration of process knowledge for product technical transfers from facility.

  • Execution of process development on existing products or new late stage clinical products including scale up to plant equipment.

  • Providing on-the-floor technical support to the Production Shift Managers for process/equipment optimization and troubleshooting.

  • Identifying continuous improvement activities and leading or participating in cross-functional teams to implement. Supporting activities in the areas of cost reduction, process efficiency and operational excellence.

  • Supporting the facility preparations for cleaning and turnaround.

  • Ensuring that all deviations from safety, quality and environmental compliance requirements are thoroughly investigated and appropriate corrective actions are identified and implemented in full.




  • Honours degree in Chemical Engineering/Process Engineering/Chemistry or related discipline.

  • Experience in either the Oral Solid Dose formulation industry and/or Pharmaceutical Industry.

  • Ability to plan, prioritise and effectively manage time, meet deadlines and produce quality deliverables.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Conflict resolution and problem solving skills.

  • Decision making - analyses issues from different points of view, able to draw accurate conclusions from analyses to support decision making and make timely decisions.

  • Openness to and ability to affect change.

  • High personal integrity, credibility and energy.

The following attributes would be desirable

  • A Good understanding of new product introductions and formulation process development.

  • Understanding and experience of Manufacturing Execution Systems and track record in developing electronic work instructions.

  • Familiarity with LSS and application in a manufacturing environment.
