The latest addition to the MSD Ireland family is MSD Biotech, Dublin. The site will play a pivotal role in the manufacture of MSD’s biologics-based medicines, including in the area of immuno-oncology, and will expand MSD’s current internal network of biologics drug substance manufacturing plants when full manufacturing operations begin in 2021.

MSD Biotech Dublin, will be MSD’s first ever Large-Scale Mammalian-Based Drug Substance Facility, with the mission and ambition to manufacture breakthrough medicines from Ireland for patients around the world.

This facility will be a significant supplier of drug substances for one of MSD’s key treatments and will also be critical in the future supply of new biotechnology products to its global network.


This role is responsible for the detailed design of Automation solutions for specified areas within MSD’s new Biologics Drug Substance Facility in Dublin, including the creation of RS and design specifications that document that design

The role is responsible for the successful implementation of all Automation solutions within a specified area of the facility. This includes conducting FAT at vendor locations and developing and completing appropriate SAT, IQ and OQ protocols. In addition, the role will have responsibility for ensuring that the Automations systems are maintained in a validated state, and for keeping the underlying technology current, as part of an active lifecycle management program.

This role is responsible for the providing ongoing support to the Automation components in specified areas of the facility , ensuring the smooth running of operations of the site. This role will be accountable for implementing system changes and conducting system investigations for specificed automation systems in such as manner as to ensure they maintain the safe and compliant operation of the site

This role will require active and engaged participation in the site tier processes (routine operations support processes) as well as supporting a culture of continuous improvement at the site.



This position will report to the A&IT Director




Qualifications / Experience

  • 5+ years GxP (life science, pharma, med device) experience

  • Decision making and problem-solving skills

  • Experience with automation system implementation and validation (as per the SDLC methodology)

  • Experience with the implementation and on going support of Automation Technology solutions

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

  • Experience with Bio-Pharmaceutical Drug Substance production

  • Experience with facility commissioning and startup

  • Full understanding and application of S88 model

  • Demonstrated expertise with the following specific technologies
    o Delta V
    o Supervisory Control Systems (SCADA) e.g. Siemens WinCC, Siemens TIA Portal, Wonderware
    o PLC Controls, Siemens and/or Allen Bradley
    o Process Data Management Systems, OSI PI
    o Siemens Desigo BMS
    o System Virtualisation

  • Six Sigma Certification

  • Ability to work with all levels of business customers in a highly dynamic environment.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline is required. Master’s Degree preferred.
