The Process and Analytical Development (P&AD) team require a Techncial Lead (Associate Director).
This position will provide expert technical support to the Process development team in the Techncial Operations laboratory in Brinny and will report to the P&AD Lead in Brinny. This team will undertake process development, process characterisation and optimisation studies for Biologics and Vaccine products in MSD. The successful candidate will be required to collaborate, coach and facilitate the process development team to ensure the effective and efficient running of the process development facility and delivery of projects for the site and wider Merck Biologics network. The successful candidate will model the Merck Leadership behaviours and drive a culture of scientific leadership

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the effective and efficient running of process and analytical projects and will be a senior member within the wider Technology team providing Technical support, guidance and expertise to ensure the success of the team.

Primary activities/responsibilities:
• Develop, characterize and optimize process unit operations at lab-scale for upstream and downstream.
• Design, develop and deploy process optimization projects within the Technical Operations laboratory and Participate in efficiency and streamlining projects contribute to process improvement, technology transfer, new product introduction and other projects required.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to a skilled technical team and provide ongoing coaching and support to all team members
• Support the development of key talent and skills within the team.
• Recommend technical approaches in line with global and local standards.
• Benchmark and remain current with development of new technologies in the upstream and downstream areas and seek to deploy process improvements through innovation and utilization of these technological advances.
• Lead and coordinate support to and from academia, other sites.
• Ensure highest Quality & Compliance (Quality and Safety) standards.
• Responsible for driving a culture of Continuous Improvement and process optimisation Lead and Participate in cross-functional problem solving teams for troubleshooting, and investigations within API, Sterile and Quality in Brinny in addition to other MSD Sites as required.
• Technical Report writing, statistical analysis of data and preparation of grant applications.

Qualifications


Required:
• MSc. Qualification with at least 10 years experience in the Pharmaceutical industry or a similar operating environment.
• Significant experience in Fermentation/Purification Process Development, scale-up, Tech Transfer of API processes.
• Experience in protein purification by various chromatographic techniques (large-scale and laboratory-scale) including experience in E.coli and monoclonal antibody Protein purification and protein refolding.
• Familiarity with the application of Design of Experiment and Quality by Design principles desirable.
• Knowledge and experience in operating in a development lab environment delivering a high standard of scientific research and development.
• Demonstrated leadership and change management skills with a continuous improvement focus.
• Demonstrated ability to fully realize improvement initiatives.
• Demonstrated successes in a team environment, such as project teams, Lean Six Sigma team, global crossfunctional teams etc.
• Stakeholder management of multiple decision makers, corporate colleagues, cross functional team by demonstrating the ability to maintain and strengthen trust relationships with people on all levels.
Desired:
• PhD qualification (Science)
• Project management qualification such as, Project Management Professional.
• Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
• Experience in lean Six Sigma tools with preference for Lean Six Sigma Black/Green Belt.
