MSD in Carlow is a world-class manufacturing facility, and the company’s first stand-alone vaccine and biologics facility outside the US. Carlow employs over 350 highly skilled employees and is an important element of MSD’s network of sites, playing a pivotal role in the manufacture of our immuno-oncology treatment.

We have an immediate requirement within our existing operations for a Facilities Engineer

She/He will perform an integral role in the management of Facilities in MSD Carlow and will take ownership for the operation and maintenance of the Facility through the outsourced provider (such as, but not limited to, Facility Maintenance, Utility Maintenance, non-GMP cleaning, GMP cleaning, Pest Control, Building Maintenance, Breakrooms/Canteen, Landscaping, Warehouse Equipment (Racking/Forktrucks), Laundry/Garbing/Lockers, Security, Waste and Temp. builds/offsite storage)

Excellent opportunities exist to progress and develop further in this role and after time to take on more responsibility in the area of vendor management and contingent worker management

Strong career experience within pharma (ideally working in Facilities Management) is most preferable but without this specific industry experience, familiarity with a highly regulated environment is desirable

  • MSD technical Subject Matter Expoert for various GMP and non-GMP Facility & Utility systems, ensuring compliance to all MSD and regulatory procedures at all times
  • Implementation of Facilities projects from inception, through to completion
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with outsourced partners and other departments to successfully complete tasks. 
  • Support Implementation of Reliability Engineering program 
  • Development of Company standard SOPs and implementation of equipment maintenance plans, thereby ensuring all equipment is properly operated and maintained
  • Complete reviews, approvals and close-out of technical documentation in line with site standard approval process
  • Direct and/or lead investigations re: deviations, out of tolerance conditions and unexpected results, conducting failure analysis, root cause determination and implementing corrective actions; preparation and analysis of facilities metrics reports to trend for improved operational efficiencies
  • Provide support with audit/inspection requirements to ensure department compliance/readiness. Participate in internal and external audits and inspections
  • Recognize and investigate opportunities for financial savings and supports opportunities for financial savings by providing resources, expertise and project work; Participates in development of profit plan and budgets
  • Resolve issues and escalate risks in a timely fashion to the relevant on-site stakeholders
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by deploying MSD Six Sigma tools and support implementation of Model Area within operations from the start
  • Work collaboratively to drive a safe and compliant culture in Carlow
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned


Facilities Lead, Associate Director



  • Bachelors Degree or higher preferred; ideally in an Engineering or other Technical discipline 
  • 3 + years of related work experience in a GMP manufacturing environment or equivalent
  • Applicant should have previously demonstrated strong team and communication skills, flexibility, and motivation, with a strong emphasis around safety and compliance practices
  • Commercial acumen 
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and effectively manage time, meet deadlines and produce quality deliverables. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Openness to and ability to affect change
  • Ability to identify areas for improvement either in business systems or product development 
  • Demonstrated ability to be self driven with respect to implementing identified improvement initiatives
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Knowledge of regulatory/code requirements to Irish, European and International Codes, Standards and Practices 
  • Report, standards, policy writing skills required 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and job related computer applications required 
  • Demonstrating energy and enthusiasm, the Facilities Engineer, will be a role model for operational excellence, and will contribute to the organisation’s overall capability to thrive and grow.

  • SME in Facilities (Facility Maintenance, Utility Maintenance, NGMP cleaning, GMP cleaning, Pest Control, Building Maintenance, Breakrooms/Canteen, Landscaping, Warehouse Equipment (Racking/Forktrucks), Laundry/Garbing/Lockers, Security, Waste and Temp. builds/offsite storage)
  • Experience of mechanical/electrical/pneumatic processes
  • Knowledge of regulatory/code requirements to Irish, European and International Codes, Standards and Practices
  • Report, standards, policy writing skills required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and job related computer applications required
  • Lean Six Sigma Methodology experience desired
  • Lead, promote, participate and supervise the implementation and maintenance of the relevant safety programmes.
  • Delivery of safety, performance and quality goals


  • Bachelors Degree or higher preferred; ideally in an Engineering or other Technical discipline 
  • Evidence of continuous professional development is desirable
