The latest addition to the MSD Ireland family is MSD Biotech, Dublin. The site will play a pivotal role in the manufacture of MSD’s biologics-based medicines, including in the area of immuno-oncology, and will expand MSD’s current internal network of biologics drug substance manufacturing plants when full manufacturing operations begin in 2021.

MSD Biotech Dublin, will be MSD’s first ever Large-Scale Mammalian-Based Drug Substance Facility, with the mission and ambition to manufacture breakthrough medicines from Ireland for patients around the world.

This facility will be a significant supplier of drug substances for one of MSD’s key treatments and will also be critical in the future supply of new biotechnology products to its global network.


The Operational Excellence Lead is an integrated production system for how we design, manage, and continuously improve our operations and supporting business processes enabled through the development of our people. Learning and Development shapes the company’s future by building people capabilities through relevant continuous improvement learnings. As part of our Manufacturing Division network, the Biotech Dublin team will manufacture, test and release critical biologics products used globally in lifesaving medicines. To support excellence in production execution, this biologics drug substance facility (BDS) will be supported by a local, small MPS and Learning & Development (L&D) Team made up of lean technical experts that are responsible for leading the installation of MPS across the site and Learning experts responsible for the delivery of a site wide learning plan. As a result, MPS and L&D will be embedded into the foundation of every operational area and become the basis for how weoperate.

The Operational Excellence Lead will provide site support for the deployment of lean systems and processes to enabling the MSD Dublin Biotech team to produce critical biologics medicines at the highest quality, for the lowest cost, and in the shortest lead time.


• Utilize various lean tools, techniques and global MPS standards to design and install critical business processes and standardized work.
• Provide teaching and coaching to effectively transfer Lean skills into the organization for the development of Lean Leaders.
• Provide cross functional support on all elements of the lean toolkit including value stream and process mapping, standard work, tier process, 5S work place organization, Strategic A3 thinking, Hoshin Kanri, managing change, 8 wastes identification, poka yoke, Kanban etc.
• Provide rapid improvement projects through the use of Kaizen, KATA and/or project teams.
• Lead the development of standardized and robust process using Task Breakdown Sheets
• Lead and support effective problem solving using the 8-step methodology to solve problems quickly.


Biotech Dublin MPS/L&D Director




Required Experience:
• A minimum of 4 years working in a Toyota-based lean operations environment.
• Hands-on application of lean tools and techniques: standardized work, scientific problem solving, value stream mapping, mistake proofing, SMED, 5S-Visual Factory, capacity analysis.
• Proven experience in coaching and teaching others to think, behave and apply lean methods and tools.

Preferred Experience:
• Experience in a Vaccines, Biologics or Sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
• Experience with operations start-up activity including greenfield or brownfield facilities.

• Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, to interface effectively with all levels of colleagues and with external customers in a team orientated manner
• Excellent analytical and systematic problem solving skills
• Ability to Develop visual controls and a framework to make problems visible and responds with urgency to effectively break down complex problems, lead root cause analysis, and develop effective countermeasures.
• Lead and coach kaizen with a team to achieve multiple target conditions to achieve an overall challenge.
• Lead kaizen to improve standardized work.
• Strong influencing skills

• Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management, Engineering or related field
